The Barbour story began in 1894 in South Shields in the North East of England. Founder John Barbour began supplying oilskins and other garments to protect sailors, fishermen and dockers from the worst of the North Sea weather. These first protective outerwear garments quickly established Barbour’s reputation for innovation and quality.

In the early 1980s, Chairman, Dame Margaret Barbour designed the waxed jackets that made Barbour a household name - the Bedale and the Beaufort. Iconic designs, they remain best-sellers and are still made in the UK in Barbour’s factory in South Shields.

A 5th generation family owned British business and the proud holder of three Royal warrants, today, Barbour is a global lifestyle brand offering a wardrobe of stylish clothing, footwear and accessories inspired by the unique values of the British countryside.
